World News

World news is the reporting of events that affect people outside their own countries, such as reports on international relations or global economics. This is the main subfield of journalism (although war coverage can be considered national for the media of belligerent nations). The first newspapers were founded in the 17th century, and from the 19th century onwards, the development of telegraph technology made it possible to report more quickly from abroad. This helped spawn several of the world’s oldest news agencies, such as AP and Reuters (the latter being a joint venture).

World News Now premiered in January 24, 2011 and is aired Monday through Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. ET on ABC. It is anchored by Dana Nair and Jeremy Hubbard. It is one of only two network news shows that airs at a time of day that allows most viewers to watch it before heading off to work or school.

The program was revamped in June 2020 to include more live video and a different set. It also added a segment called Insomniac Theater, which has the anchors reviewing and rating (on a scale of 1 to 5) a current film. The show closes with some version of the “World News Polka,” which is usually accompanied by an old-timey, silent cartoon. It is not known who composed the song, but it has been recorded by numerous artists. World News Now formerly ended with an interview and analysis by a political expert from a prestigious think tank, such as the Brookings Institution or New America Foundation.
