Climate change has become one of the greatest challenges of this century, with impacts spreading to many aspects of life, including the frequency and intensity of global flooding. Floods, which are one of the most destructive natural disasters, are now occurring more frequently due to changing weather patterns. One of the main contributing factors is increasing global temperatures. Higher temperatures cause greater water evaporation, resulting in more intense rainfall. Research shows that tropical and subtropical regions are experiencing significant spikes in extreme rainfall. As a result, inadequate drainage systems struggle to cope with increasing water volumes, often leading to flooding. Apart from that, the melting of polar ice and glaciers as a result of global warming also contributes to sea level rise. With rising sea levels, coastal areas are increasingly vulnerable to tidal flooding, especially during storms. Areas such as Jakarta, Miami and Bangkok are at high risk, given their dense populations and fragile infrastructure. The socio-economic impact of flooding is also very large. Communities located in flood-prone areas often lose their homes and livelihoods. The agricultural sector suffered heavy losses due to floods, which damaged crops and hindered economic recovery. The provision of health services is also threatened, with the increased risk of disease spreading due to flooding. Flooding exacerbated by climate change is driving the need for better risk planning and management. Many countries are starting to implement mitigation strategies, such as improving drainage infrastructure and water control. Environmentally friendly technologies, such as rainwater harvesting systems, are also increasingly being implemented to meet this challenge. The international community is increasingly realizing the importance of collaboration in dealing with this issue. Global agreements such as the Paris Agreement focus on reducing carbon emissions and global warming, with the aim of slowing the impact of climate change. Adaptation efforts in the form of environmental policies and education are also important to strengthen the resilience of vulnerable regions. In a broader context, global flooding due to climate change encapsulates the complexity that affects entire ecosystems. With the climate continuing to change, it is important for society to adapt and innovate, in order to reduce negative impacts and increase resilience to these natural disasters.
